    On the Interface Between Operations and Human Resources Management

    Operations management (OM) and human resources management (HRM) have historically been very separate fields. In practice, operations managers and human resource managers interact primarily on administrative issues regarding payroll and other matters. In academia, the two subjects are studied by separate communities of scholars publishing in disjoint sets of journals, drawing on mostly separate disciplinary foundations. Yet, operations and human resources are intimately related at a fundamental level. Operations are the context that often explains or moderates the effects of human resource activities such as pay, training, communications and staffing. Human responses to operations management systems often explain variations or anomalies that would otherwise be treated as randomness or error variance in traditional operations research models. In this paper, we probe the interface between operations and human resources by examining how human considerations affect classical OM results and how operational considerations affect classical HRM results. We then propose a unifying framework for identifying new research opportunities at the intersection of the two fields

    Pion, kaon, proton and anti-proton transverse momentum distributions from p+p and d+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

    Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of π±\pi^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm}, and p(pˉ)p(\bar{p}) from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (RdAuR_{dAu}) between protons (p+pˉ)(p+\bar{p}) and charged hadrons (hh) in the transverse momentum range 1.2<pT<3.01.2<{p_{T}}<3.0 GeV/c is measured to be 1.19±0.051.19\pm0.05(stat)±0.03\pm0.03(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little centrality dependence. The yield ratio of (p+pˉ)/h(p+\bar{p})/h in minimum-bias d+Au collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au+Au collisions, indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the relative baryon enhancement observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table.     We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth (η,ϕ)(\eta,\phi) bin-size dependence of event-wise mean transverse momentum fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV. We invert that dependence to obtain ptp_t autocorrelations on differences (ηΔ,ϕΔ)(\eta_\Delta,\phi_\Delta) interpreted to represent velocity/temperature distributions on (η,ϕ\eta,\phi). The general form of the autocorrelations suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The autocorrelations vary strongly with collision centrality, which suggests that fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central Au-Au collisions relative to peripheral or p-p collisions. \\Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Keeney has described a set of axioms which allows one to merge individual utility functions using a linear combination [Keeney, Ralph L. 1976. A group preference axiomatization with cardinal utility. Management Sci. 23 140-145]. This is a very handy result, especially because the linear combination is probably the most easily studied of all possible methods. This comment is intended to call attention to three concepts which aid in determining and interpreting the weights obtained and studying the structure of the group's preferences. These concepts have been illustrated in [McClain, John O., Vithala R. Rao. 1974. Tradeoffs and conflicts in evaluation of health system alternatives: methodology for analysis. Health Services Res.     Dynamics of Exponential Smoothing with Trend and Seasonal Terms

    The characteristics of seasonally adjusted, exponentially smoothed forecasts are studied through the frequency response and impulse response functions. The appropriateness of using exponential smoothing for updating the seasonal base series is called into question, due to its tendency to store random noise for long periods. Exponential smoothing with trend is also examined. It is concluded that Brown's formulation has the property of being critically damped, so that its response to changes in the time series under study is the most rapid possible without overshoot.
